On February 15th, 2001 Shelby was able to go to the District Science Fair for the second time. She was very excited. She did the same project as she did in 5th grade when she got to go to District before. We were curious to see if the results would be different. It turns out that they were. The first time she got an honorable mention but we had heard it was because she was in 5th grade and 5th graders couldn't go on to State.
So on March 21st, 2011 Shelby went to State. When she was done she said that there was a lot more competition here than there was at the district level which was a given. The boy next to her had one on rockets which she thought was pretty cool.
Unfortunately I forgot my camera on the night of the awards ceremony but Shelby had said earlier that day that she would be happy with whatever she got and that she was just happy that she was able to go. Well it turns out that the same thing happened at State as happened at District. First they gave out Honorable Mention certificates and then they gave out Excellence certificates, wooden plaques and then the 3rd, 2nd and 1st place awards. As I watched the group of kids got smaller and smaller until she was the last one standing and to her surprise she took 1st place!!!
She got a cash award of $75.00 and a $300.00 scholarship to Weber State for her first year in college. She also got a special award of a membership into the Association of Women Geologists. Now we just have to do some research to find out what that association is all about. At the end of the day she said that she was "emotionally drained" and I can't say as I blame her. It had been a really good day for her. Congratulations Shelby!!!
